4th Graders
Our 4th grade team works together to create a homework system that is meaningful, equitable, and manageable. The main purposes for our homework is to develop study skills and to continue to develop a love for reading. This fall we will start by introducing the 40 Books Homework Challenge. Over the course of this school year, each child will try to reach at least 40 books of different genres. This is NOT a competition between students, but rather an opportunity of great personal growth as a reader. Not only will this help develop reading skills, but we will also use the challenge to focus on goal setting and study habits throughout the year. I will send home information about this as we introduce the project and will also post information below once we discuss it in class. Here is an article link to the creator of this challenge, including the reasoning behind it and what it is not. Here is a link to the pdf version of the 40 Book Challenge, in case your student loses theirs. 5th Graders Fifth graders are in their final year, just about to transition into middle school. Because of this, I will work with fifth graders to develop study skills needed to be successful next year. They will:

There are countless ways to help our classroom community. The first is to make sure your child gets enough sleep and comes to school on time and ready to learn each day. If you want to get involved, here are some options for you:

Birthdays are wonderful! However, with 28 students keep in mind that you need to bring enough treats (if you choose to do so) for the entire class. I will update this section as I learn about student food allergies.
Regardless of treats, our class will make your child feel special for their birthday! |

I believe in student-centered, responsive management practices. I use problem solving, natural consequences, and behavior skill training as ways to help students with most behavior concerns. Additionally, our entire class studies emotional intelligence throughout the year. This gives students skills to notice and regulate their own feelings, as well as have empathy for others. The core of all behavior problem solving is restorative justice, which uses these guiding questions to move forward after conflict or problems:
What happened? What were you thinking of at the time? Who has been affected by what you have done? In what way? What do you think you need to do to make things right? |
